Liverpool boss Arne Slot remains cautious over whether Alexander Isak will feature from the start in Saturday’s Merseyside derby against Everton. The Swedish striker made his long-awaited debut for the Reds in Wednesday’s 3-2 Champions League win over Atletico Madrid, playing an hour after months on the sidelines during his drawn-out move from Newcastle United.
“We’ll have to see how he feels after that,” Slot said. “Alex probably felt his body more than ever after those 60 minutes. We’ll assess him in training before deciding on the lineup.”
The Dutch coach hinted at the possibility of pairing Isak with summer signing Hugo Ekitike in attack, though he stressed the team’s 4-3-3 system remains the foundation.
“If both are in top condition, it’s an option,” Slot explained. “We usually stick to our structure, but finishing games with two strikers has happened often as well.”
Liverpool’s Perfect Start vs Everton’s Strong Form
Liverpool enter the derby as the only Premier League side with a flawless record—four wins from four—while Everton sit sixth after an encouraging start. The clash at Anfield promises intensity, with both managers acknowledging the rivalry but also the underlying respect.
Slot highlighted Everton’s show of solidarity following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother in July. Several Everton players, including striker Beto, visited Anfield to pay respects.
“In moments of tragedy, rivalry takes a step back and respect shines through,” Slot said.
Moyes Eyes Liverpool “Vulnerabilities”
Everton manager David Moyes admitted Liverpool remain formidable but insisted his team could exploit weaknesses.
“Liverpool have been excellent, but they’ve also shown vulnerability at times when conceding,” Moyes told reporters. “We’ll have to capitalize on those moments.”
Moyes, who has only six wins in 44 meetings against Liverpool, noted his side’s resilience this season and warned of the Reds’ habit of scoring late winners.
“Like Ferguson’s teams in ‘Fergie time,’ Liverpool have been finding decisive goals late on. Concentration will be key,” he added.
What’s at Stake
Liverpool’s bid to maintain their perfect start faces the test of a motivated Everton side eager to prove their progress under Moyes. For the Toffees, this early-season derby offers a chance to measure themselves against the reigning champions and perhaps deliver a statement result.
