Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has hailed the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 as a pivotal chapter for women’s cricket in India, drawing parallels with the historic 1983 Men’s World Cup triumph that transformed Indian cricket forever.
A Historic Comparison
Reflecting on the 1983 World Cup, Tendulkar described how the iconic victory inspired a generation. “That win told young Indians that dreams need not be constrained by boundaries,” he wrote in a column for the ICC. Highlighting memorable moments such as Kapil Dev’s unbeaten 175 against Zimbabwe, Tendulkar noted that these feats have become part of cricketing folklore.
He also shared personal memories from his childhood, recalling his days as a ball boy during the 1987 Men’s World Cup. “Watching the heroes up close, I resolved that one day I too would wear the India jersey,” he said. Now, almost four decades later, Tendulkar senses that Indian women’s cricket is poised for a similar defining moment.
Inspiring the Next Generation
According to the cricketing icon, the tournament is more than a competition—it’s a platform to inspire dreams across the country. “Somewhere in Moga, a teenage girl might be clutching her bat tighter, hoping to emulate Harmanpreet Kaur. In Sangli, another girl might be practicing her drives, daring to dream like Smriti Mandhana,” he wrote.
Tendulkar specifically lauded India’s star batters for their influence in bringing women’s cricket into the spotlight. He recalled Harmanpreet Kaur’s memorable 171 against Australia in the 2017 World Cup, describing it as a performance that propelled Indian women’s cricket into the mainstream. Similarly, Smriti Mandhana’s 50-ball century against Australia was highlighted as a demonstration of skill, confidence, and leadership on the world stage.
A Landmark Tournament
This World Cup is also being recognized for setting new standards in the sport, including a record prize money pool announced by the ICC—reportedly surpassing the 2023 Men’s World Cup. “This sends a powerful message: women’s cricket deserves not just applause, but equal respect,” Tendulkar emphasized.
Beyond the Trophy
While India will aim for its maiden ICC Women’s World Cup title, Tendulkar stressed the wider responsibility shouldered by the players. “They will carry the hopes of millions, inspire a generation, and redefine what is achievable,” he wrote. Drawing another connection with 1983, he concluded that this tournament has the potential to redefine Indian women’s cricket and cement its legacy.
The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 will begin on Tuesday, September 30, with India facing Sri Lanka in the opening match at Guwahati.
