Wales head coach Craig Bellamy has backed England to eventually end their long wait for silverware, describing them as one of the strongest international sides in world football.
Wales Face England in Wembley Friendly
Wales travel to Wembley on Thursday, 9 October, to face England in an international friendly before hosting Belgium in a crucial World Cup qualifier the following Monday.
The fixture marks the first meeting between the neighbours since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where England’s 3-0 victory eliminated Wales at the group stage. Since then, both nations have undergone managerial changes, with Bellamy replacing Rob Page and Thomas Tuchel taking over from Gareth Southgate.
Respect for England’s Rise
Despite England’s failure to win a trophy since the 1966 World Cup, Bellamy believes their recent consistency at the top level makes success inevitable. Ranked fourth in the world, England have reached the last two European Championship finals.
“This is a top nation. They’ve made back-to-back Euro finals, and when they go to tournaments, they’re there to win,” Bellamy said.
“I honestly believe it’s only a matter of time before England lift another trophy. I thought it might have happened already, but it will happen.”
No Rivalry Talk – Focus on Identity
While the clash will draw plenty of attention, Bellamy dismissed the idea of personal rivalry.
“I grew up in England, my football education was there, and I’ve got huge respect for how they support their athletes. For me, it’s not about rivalry — it’s about identity. Who we are as a team. How we work without the ball, how we show personality with the ball. That’s what matters most.”
The 45-year-old has impressed in his first year as Wales boss, guiding his side to top spot in their Nations League group while instilling an ambitious, high-tempo style of play.
Wales Eye Mikey Moore Switch
Away from Wembley, Wales are also working to strengthen their squad for the future. The Football Association of Wales has approached Tottenham Hotspur winger Mikey Moore, currently on loan at Rangers, about switching allegiance from England Under-19s.
Bellamy confirmed discussions have taken place but stressed he prefers such talks to remain private.
“We look at every player who’s eligible,” he explained. “But I don’t like young players being put in the spotlight. Our focus is on whether they have the right mentality and ability to add something to us. If they do, we’ll do our work quietly behind the scenes.”
