Sciver-Brunt Leads From the Front With Fifth World Cup Ton

England continued their strong run at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, cruising to a convincing win over Sri Lanka in Colombo to reclaim the top spot in the standings. The victory showcased England’s growing dominance as Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone delivered standout performances with bat and ball respectively.

Sciver-Brunt led from the front, smashing a brilliant 117 off 117 balls — her fifth century in World Cup cricket — as England posted a competitive 253/9 in 50 overs. Her knock, a blend of patience and power, anchored the innings and ensured England had a strong platform despite Sri Lanka’s disciplined bowling effort.

Ecclestone’s Spell Turns the Game on Its Head

If Sciver-Brunt set up the game, Sophie Ecclestone finished it in style. The left-arm spinner produced a spell of pure class, dismantling Sri Lanka’s middle order with figures of 4 for 17 from 10 overs. Her accuracy and subtle variations completely stifled the hosts’ chase, restricting them well short of the target.

Sciver-Brunt, who also captains the side, couldn’t hide her admiration for Ecclestone’s impact after the match.

“Her spell was pretty special,” Sciver-Brunt said. “She came on at a time when Sri Lanka were building a partnership — I just wanted her to steady things, not necessarily take wickets. But she did both. Her clarity and execution make her such a brilliant bowler and a huge asset for our team.”

Ecclestone’s performance once again highlighted why she is regarded as one of the best spinners in women’s cricket. Her calm under pressure and consistency with the ball turned what could have been a tricky chase into a comfortable victory for England.

Captain’s Composure Shines Under Pressure

Beyond her batting heroics, Sciver-Brunt’s tactical awareness and composed leadership stood out. Her fifth World Cup century underlined her ability to rise to the occasion when her team needs it most.

“I think wanting to do the best for my team brings out the best in me,” she reflected. “Experience helps too — Heather [Knight] and I enjoy figuring out the middle overs together. Batting here was about adapting quickly since the pitch changed throughout the innings.”

Sciver-Brunt emphasized adaptability as England’s key strength in subcontinental conditions. “We handled the wicket really well today, and hopefully we can carry that momentum into the next game,” she added.

England Continue Momentum Ahead of Pakistan Clash

With this victory, England have reaffirmed their credentials as one of the tournament favorites. The blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent continues to deliver across departments, setting them up confidently for their next fixture against Pakistan, also in Colombo on Wednesday.

If Sciver-Brunt’s leadership and Ecclestone’s artistry remain in sync, England will be a formidable force as the World Cup enters its decisive stages.
