Colombo: Rain had the final say at the R Premadasa International Stadium as Sri Lanka’s ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 clash against New Zealand was abandoned on Tuesday after a promising start from the hosts.
Sri Lanka, sent in to bat after winning the toss, posted a competitive 258/6 in their 50 overs — their most complete batting performance of the tournament — before persistent rain prevented New Zealand’s reply and forced the match to be called off.
The result saw both teams share points, with Sri Lanka moving to two points from four matches (both from washouts) and still searching for their first win. New Zealand, meanwhile, climbed to three points from four games, with just one victory so far.
Sri Lanka Shine with the Bat
The home side started brightly as Chamari Athapaththu (53) and Vishmi Gunaratne (42) forged the tournament’s first 100-plus opening stand, adding 101 runs for the first wicket. Athapaththu played fluently, finding gaps at will, while Gunaratne provided solid support before Sophie Devine broke the partnership.
Middle-order batters Harshitha Samarawickrama and Hasini Perera kept the momentum going with a steady 58-run stand for the third wicket. However, New Zealand hit back with quick strikes to peg Sri Lanka at a crucial stage.
Silva’s Late Blitz Lifts Sri Lanka
The real fireworks came from Nilakshika Silva, who turned the innings on its head with an unbeaten 55 off just 28 balls, registering the fastest fifty of the tournament (26 balls). Her innings featured seven fours and one six, powering Sri Lanka to 80 runs in the final 10 overs, including 47 in the last five.
Devine Leads New Zealand’s Attack
For New Zealand, Sophie Devine led from the front with figures of 3/54, while Bree Illing (2/39) provided solid support. Despite their efforts, the Kiwi bowlers couldn’t prevent Silva’s late flourish.
Rain Halts Play Before Chase
Persistent rain after the innings break delayed New Zealand’s chase indefinitely. Despite the ground staff’s best efforts, the outfield remained unplayable, and officials eventually called off the match, leaving Sri Lanka ruing a missed opportunity for their first win.
Final Scores:
Sri Lanka – 258/6 (50 overs)
New Zealand – Did not bat
Result: Match abandoned due to rain (1 point each)
