Athapaththu’s Final-Over Heroics Seal a Seven-Run Win

In one of the most dramatic finishes of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, Sri Lanka pulled off a sensational seven-run victory over Bangladesh in Navi Mumbai on Monday. The result not only reignited Sri Lanka’s semi-final hopes but also ended Bangladesh’s campaign after their fifth defeat of the tournament.

Defending a modest total of 203, Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu delivered a stunning final over to secure the win. With Bangladesh needing just eight runs from six balls, Athapaththu showcased nerves of steel — taking three wickets in four deliveries — as Bangladesh collapsed from 192/5 to 195/9.

Bangladesh’s Brave Chase Falls Just Short

Bangladesh appeared to be in control for most of their chase thanks to a resilient 77-run knock from Nigar Sultana Joty and an unbeaten 64 from Sharmin Akter. The pair added 82 runs for the fourth wicket, steadying the innings after an early wobble at 44/3.

However, as the finish line approached, the pressure mounted. Sri Lanka’s bowlers, led by Athapaththu (4/42), tightened their grip in the death overs. The turning point came when Joty fell to Athapaththu in the final over, triggering a stunning collapse that sealed Bangladesh’s fate.

Perera Anchors Sri Lanka’s Innings

Earlier, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 202, despite a commanding start. Hasini Perera top-scored with a fluent 85 off 103 balls, supported by Athapaththu (46) and Nilakshika Silva (37). Perera and Silva’s 74-run stand rebuilt the innings after Sri Lanka had slipped to 100/4, but a late collapse prevented them from posting a bigger total.

Bangladesh’s bowlers put in a disciplined display, with Shorna Akter (3 wickets) leading the charge. Sri Lanka lost four wickets for just 27 runs between overs 31 and 40, as momentum swung back to the visitors before they eventually bowled the hosts out in the 49th over.

Perera’s composed innings, laced with 13 fours and a six, earned her the Aramco Player of the Match award.

What the Result Means

This victory keeps Sri Lanka firmly in contention for a semi-final berth, while Bangladesh bow out of the tournament with pride after pushing the hosts to the brink.

Sri Lanka will next face Pakistan on October 24, while Bangladesh wrap up their campaign against India on October 26.
