Negotiations progressing as Barça set sights on Champions League glory
Barcelona sporting director Deco has expressed confidence that Frenkie de Jong will extend his stay at Camp Nou, while outlining the club’s ambitions for the upcoming season.
In an interview with Lance, Deco confirmed that discussions with the Dutch midfielder are advancing positively.
“We are in conversations. I believe we will reach an agreement. He is an important player for us. I think he is happy at Barcelona, and we are also happy with him. So I don’t think there will be any problem,” Deco said.
Lewandowski’s future to be decided year by year
The former Portuguese international also shed light on Robert Lewandowski’s situation. With the striker now in the twilight of his career, Deco suggested that decisions on his future will be made on a shorter-term basis.
“Robert was important and he still is for us. At his age and stage of his career, it makes sense to take things year by year. Right now, he is fully focused on this season,” he explained.
Transfer strategy and squad depth
Deco reflected on Barcelona’s summer transfer window, emphasizing the importance of retaining core talents such as Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, and Jules Koundé. He also highlighted the arrival of goalkeeper Joan Garcia as crucial cover, given Marc-André ter Stegen’s previous injury concerns.
New recruits Marcus Rashford and Roony Bardghji were praised for bringing versatility and long-term potential to the squad.
Champions League remains the ultimate target
Looking ahead, Deco made it clear that Barcelona’s top priority is Champions League success, while acknowledging the strength of rivals Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain.
“It will be a good and attractive game, but more of a qualification game. We have to go step by step. There’s no point dreaming of winning the Champions League if you don’t get past the group stage. Our first goal is to qualify,” he added, speaking ahead of Barça’s showdown with Luis Enrique’s PSG.
