Giannis Antetokounmpo Returns to Milwaukee Bucks Practice After Battling COVID-19

Miami, FL — The Milwaukee Bucks received a major boost on Saturday as Giannis Antetokounmpo rejoined the team at practice following his recovery from COVID-19. It marked the two-time MVP’s first on-court session of the season after spending time in Greece recuperating from the illness.

Limited Participation but Positive Signs

Head coach Doc Rivers confirmed that Antetokounmpo took part only in non-contact drills, focusing on conditioning and light court work. The Greek superstar admitted he still isn’t back to full strength.

“I think it took a toll on my body. I’m not feeling 100% yet physically,” Antetokounmpo said. “I was able to run a bit, do some 5-on-0, and just get my rhythm back. I’ll take it day by day. With about 18 days before the season opener, I believe I’ll be ready.”

Rivers added that Antetokounmpo plans to use the next three days to steadily rebuild his fitness before ramping up to full practices.

Bucks Adjusting Without Their Star

While the Bucks have missed their leader in the early stages of camp, Rivers noted that the situation may have had an unexpected benefit.

“The key for us every season is how we perform when Giannis is off the floor,” Rivers explained. “These past few days allowed us to experiment with different lineups and see how others step up in his absence. That could help us in the long run.”

Looking Ahead to the New Season

Antetokounmpo, who turns 31 in December, is entering his 13th NBA season — all with Milwaukee. His resume includes nine All-Star appearances, two MVP awards, an NBA championship, and a Finals MVP. He’s also one of only two players to average 30-plus points in each of the last three seasons, alongside Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

The Bucks are currently training at Florida International University in Miami ahead of their preseason opener against the Heat on Monday. For Milwaukee, seeing their franchise cornerstone back on the court is a welcome sight as they look to chase another championship.
