Beijing: Jannik Sinner stamped his authority on the Beijing Open, cruising past American up-and-comer Learner Tien 6-2, 6-2 in the final to claim his third title of the season. The Italian star showcased both raw power and tactical intelligence, proving he remains one of the ATP Tour’s most formidable competitors.
Sinner’s Clinical Performance
From the outset, Sinner controlled the match with aggressive baseline play and precise shot-making. Tien, in his first ATP final, tried to push the pace and move Sinner around the court, but the Italian responded with a combination of booming serves, sharp forehands, and strategic net approaches. On two separate occasions in the second set, Tien reached break point, only for Sinner to neutralize the threat with a flurry of first serves, forehands, and finishing smashes.
The victory was wrapped up in just 72 minutes, with Sinner hitting 10 aces and 24 winners. A standout moment came early in the second set, when he executed a backhand down the line, followed it to the net, and finished with a spectacular jumping smash—a move reflecting the influence of Carlos Alcaraz on his evolving game.
Adapting After the US Open
Sinner has been intentional about expanding his tactical repertoire this season. After his US Open loss to Alcaraz, he committed to introducing more variety, incorporating drop shots, spins, and angled shots into his play. “We’ve been reflecting a lot on the US Open final. We are working on new things… the amount of mistakes is a bit higher, but I hope that recovers in a positive way,” Sinner said.
While the Beijing final saw mostly first-strike tennis, Sinner’s flashes of finesse and net play indicate a promising evolution in his style. The balance of aggression and variety could define his path in the latter part of the season and beyond.
Learner Tien Makes His Mark
Despite the one-sided scoreline, Tien’s run to the final was impressive. The 19-year-old American notched five Top 10 victories in 2025, defeating Francisco Cerundolo, Flavio Cobolli, Lorenzo Musetti, and Daniil Medvedev to reach his first ATP final. His tactical counterpunching and composure signal a rising talent on the tour. With this performance, Tien jumps to world No. 36, overtaking Joao Fonseca in the rankings and strengthening his case for ATP Newcomer of the Year.
Looking Ahead: Shanghai Masters
Sinner will now focus on defending his Shanghai Masters title, where he will continue to chase world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz. With confidence high after Beijing, the Italian enters the Masters 1000 as the hunter rather than the hunted, carrying momentum and a renewed strategic approach into the next chapter of his season.
“This win is a step forward. Thanks to my team, and we’ll try to improve and push for more,” Sinner said while lifting the Beijing trophy.
