Los Angeles Lakers star focused on championship run, not end of career
LeBron James has entered his 23rd NBA training camp, and if anyone expected retirement talk to dominate the headlines, the league’s all-time leading scorer quickly set the record straight — he’s locked in on the season ahead.
Focused on the Present, Not the Finish Line
Speaking at Lakers media day, the 39-year-old superstar made it clear that while the end of his career is “sooner than later,” he’s not thinking about it right now.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to play the game I love for another season,” James said. “However the journey unfolds, I’m fully invested. I don’t know when the end is, but I know I’m still here to give everything I can.”
This season will be historic — James will become the first player in NBA history to play 23 seasons when he steps on the court against Golden State on October 21.
On His Own Timeline
The presence of Bronny James on the Lakers’ roster adds a personal touch to LeBron’s longevity. Yet, while fans speculate about a future where he could share the court with both sons, James downplayed the idea.
“I’m not waiting on Bryce,” he said with a grin, noting that his younger son is beginning his college career at Arizona. “He has his own path, and I have mine.”
Still Competing at an Elite Level
Even at 41 this December, James remains among the NBA’s top performers. Last season, he averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds across 70 games — earning All-NBA honors for the 21st straight year.
“Age is just a number,” James remarked. “When you look at history, not many players have done this at my age. I don’t take it for granted.”
Lakers’ New Look Roster
The Lakers are reshaped heading into the new season. Following last year’s blockbuster trade of Anthony Davis for Luka Doncic, the franchise added Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, and Jake LaRavia. The moves were designed to strengthen Los Angeles after their first-round playoff exit to Minnesota.
“I’m excited to see what we can do,” James said. “We’ve got the pieces, now it’s about putting it all together.”
Finding Balance On and Off the Court
While chasing another championship, James is also embracing family life and hobbies — including golf, which he has taken up passionately. “I feel like you are the age you tell yourself,” he laughed. “I feel great, my family’s amazing, and I’m still motivated every day.”
