Lorenzo Musetti Issues Apology to Chinese Fans After China Open Outburst

Beijing — Italian tennis star Lorenzo Musetti has publicly apologized after making an inappropriate remark toward spectators during his second-round victory at the China Open.

The 23-year-old was caught on camera venting frustration during a tense match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, where he shouted: “these (expletive) Chinese are always coughing.” His comments, triggered by repeated coughing in the stands, quickly spread across social media and sparked a wave of criticism, with many accusing him of disrespect and racism.

Musetti’s Statement of Regret

Musetti addressed the controversy on Saturday through a heartfelt post on social media:

“I am truly sorry. I respect you deeply, I feel at home here, and I value the warmth and kindness I have always received from you.”

The Italian clarified that his anger was directed only at a few individuals disrupting play, not the Chinese community at large. He admitted, however, that his choice of words was “wrong and inappropriate.”

“It happened in a moment of stress and tension in the second tiebreak, but still, this is no excuse at all. I realize the way I expressed myself hurt many Chinese fans’ feelings.”

A Growing List of Apologies in Tennis

Musetti is the second tennis player this month to apologize to Chinese supporters. On September 17, Taylor Townsend of the United States expressed regret after posting disparaging jokes about local cuisine during the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen.

The quick succession of incidents highlights how athletes are increasingly held accountable for their words and actions, particularly in a country where tennis has a passionate and growing fan base.

For Musetti, the apology may be the first step toward repairing relations with Chinese supporters who have long welcomed him on tour.
