Meg Lanning Predicts Selection Rotation as Australia Chase World Cup Glory

Australia’s enviable squad depth could prove their biggest weapon at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, with former captain Meg Lanning expecting the defending champions to rotate their lineup throughout the tournament.

Depth Gives Australia Flexibility

The Australians began their title defence with a commanding win over New Zealand before rain washed out their second fixture against Sri Lanka. Despite the disruption, Lanning believes the team’s balance across the 15-player squad will allow them to adopt a “horses-for-courses” strategy, tailoring their XI based on conditions and opposition.

Speaking on The ICC Review, Lanning highlighted the omission of experienced seamer Megan Schutt in the opener against the White Ferns as an example of the tough decisions Australia will continue to face.

“It was a brave call because ‘Shooter’ (Schutt) is a world-class bowler and has been for a very long time,” Lanning said.
“But I think they’ll base their decisions on matchups and conditions. The great thing about this squad is the variety of options available. Darcie Brown was seen as the better matchup for New Zealand, and that’s the sort of flexibility we’ll keep seeing.”

Competition Within the Squad

Lanning admitted Schutt will be “fuming” at missing out but backed her to bounce back strongly when given another chance.

“She’s a very competitive person and will want to get back in the team as quickly as she can. But that’s the luxury Australia has—no matter who takes the field, they can step up and perform.”

Washout Piles on Subtle Pressure

While Australia remain unbeaten, the abandoned fixture against Sri Lanka could yet prove costly.

“The washout wasn’t ideal. It adds a bit of pressure because you’re banking on wins in matches you’re expected to dominate. Against tougher opposition, things can get tricky if you don’t have those points in hand,” Lanning explained.

Still, she remains confident that the team is well-equipped to handle setbacks, provided there are no further disruptions.

Next Challenge: Pakistan in Colombo

Australia resume their campaign on Wednesday against Pakistan in Colombo, with Lanning expecting more strategic calls on team selection depending on the surface and conditions.
