Miami Heat GM Andy Elisburg Returns After Foot Amputation and Life-Threatening Infections

Miami, FL – As the Miami Heat gear up for the 2025–26 NBA season, longtime general manager Andy Elisburg is making his return to the organization after enduring a serious health battle that nearly sidelined him permanently.

What started as a foot infection late last season spiraled into multiple medical complications, forcing Elisburg to spend weeks in a Coral Gables hospital and undergo several surgeries. Doctors discovered infections in his foot, back, and knee, which eventually spread to his liver and kidneys.

“When we got to the hospital, I was a mess,” Elisburg told The Miami Herald. “My kidney level was basically at dialysis level. There were a lot of things really wrong, and they began a bunch of surgeries.”

The situation became so severe that Elisburg had part of his foot amputated. Following his release from the hospital, he has been undergoing intensive physical therapy four to six times a week, currently relying on a wheelchair but determined to walk again.

Support from the Miami Heat Family

Despite his health scare, Elisburg credited Heat president Pat Riley and team owners Micky and Nick Arison for their unwavering support.

“When I first got sick, they basically said, ‘Andy, do not worry about your job one bit. Focus on your health. We’ll handle everything here,’” Elisburg recalled.

While away from the team physically, Elisburg remained active in basketball operations. He played a key role in Miami’s 2025 NBA Draft, where the Heat selected Kasparas Jakucionis with the 20th overall pick.

Looking Ahead to the 2025–26 Season

Elisburg acknowledged the challenges but expressed gratitude and excitement for the upcoming season.

“This is obviously not what I wanted. I can certainly say it’s unfair. But I’m also very lucky in the life I lead. I’m very excited that another season is about to begin, and I’m looking forward to being part of it.”

While Elisburg may not travel with the team initially, he plans to be present at home games and practices. Miami will officially begin training camp at Florida Atlantic University this week, with the season opener set for October 22 against the Orlando Magic.
