De Klerk Delivers Under Pressure
South Africa continued their winning momentum at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, clinching a dramatic three-wicket victory over Bangladesh in Visakhapatnam on Monday.
Chasing 233 for victory, the Proteas found themselves in deep trouble at 78/5, but crucial knocks from Marizanne Kapp (56) and Chloe Tryon (62) turned the tide. With eight runs needed off the final over, Nadine de Klerk held her nerve — after surviving a dropped catch — to finish the game in emphatic style with a six, sealing the chase with three balls to spare.
The win marked South Africa’s third straight triumph, lifting them to third place in the standings with six points from four matches, while Bangladesh slumped to their third consecutive defeat after a strong start to the tournament.
Kapp and Tryon Steady the Ship
When Bangladesh’s disciplined attack reduced South Africa to 78/5, the match looked to be slipping away. But Kapp and Tryon combined for a resilient 85-run stand, mixing caution with aggression to rebuild the innings.
After Tryon was run out and Kapp dismissed by Nahida Akter (2/44), Bangladesh sensed a comeback, but de Klerk (28 off 25)* and Masabata Klaas (14)* ensured calm in the final overs to take their side over the line.
“We showed great character,” said South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt. “The way Nadine finished it off was outstanding — this team just keeps finding a way to win.”
Bangladesh’s Bright Start with the Bat
Earlier, Bangladesh posted a competitive 232/6 after opting to bat. Openers Farzana Haque and Rubya Haider gave the side a steady start, compiling their highest opening partnership of the tournament.
After Haider’s dismissal, Nigar Sultana Joty and Sharmin Akter (50) anchored the innings before Shorna Akter (51 off 33 balls) produced fireworks at the death. Shorna’s blitz — featuring three fours and three sixes — was the fastest half-century of the World Cup and, along with Ritu Moni’s late cameo, powered Bangladesh past 230.
“We were about 15–20 runs short,” said Joty after the match. “Our bowlers fought hard, but credit to South Africa’s middle order for how they batted under pressure.”
