Rockets Prioritize Tari Eason Extension Before Finalizing Kevin Durant Deal

The Houston Rockets are reportedly focusing on securing a contract extension for young forward Tari Eason before finalizing the widely expected two-year deal with Kevin Durant.

According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, completing Durant’s contract first would not be a major issue, as the veteran forward can sign for a maximum of two more seasons under the NBA’s over-38 rule, having turned 37 on September 29.

Eason Extension Key Details

Eason is expected to receive a four-year extension if negotiations progress smoothly. Rockets management aims to clarify the salary cap impact of Eason’s extension before committing to Durant’s deal.

The forward’s contract will also consider recent extensions for Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, and Kevin Porter Jr.’s five-year, $122 million deal signed earlier this summer. Cap strategists suggest Eason’s deal could come in below Porter Jr.’s $24.4 million average annual value, potentially featuring a player option in Year 4, similar to Green and Sengun’s contracts.

Last Season Performance

In 57 games, Eason averaged:

  • 12.0 points
  • 6.4 rebounds
  • 1.5 assists
He shot 48.7% from the field and 34.2% from three, showing steady improvement and solidifying his role in Houston’s long-term plans.
