Sophie Devine Eyes Fairy-Tale Send-Off as New Zealand Gear Up for CWC 2025

Five-Time World Cup Appearance Marks a Career Milestone

Sophie Devine is set to bid farewell to ODI cricket at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, making this her fifth appearance at the prestigious tournament. The 36-year-old all-rounder has been a cornerstone of the New Zealand White Ferns, and her leadership will be crucial as the team aims for a deep run in India and Sri Lanka.

Having never lifted the 50-over World Cup trophy since New Zealand’s sole triumph in 2000, Devine admits that winning this time would be an extra feather in her cap. For her, it’s about more than just silverware — it’s about enjoying the journey of her final World Cup.

“I feel in a really good space to go out and enjoy every moment of my last World Cup,” Devine said. “I feel confident in my own abilities and proud to lead this team with so much passion for the White Ferns and New Zealand Cricket.”

A Career Built on Growth and Passion

Reflecting on nearly two decades of international cricket, Devine emphasizes how her love for the team has only grown since her debut as a 17-year-old. “It’s amazing to think how far I’ve come, not just as a player but as a person. I’ve had the chance to take on so many roles within this team, and it’s shaped who I am today,” she added.

With a blend of emerging talent and experienced campaigners, Devine will guide a White Ferns squad ready to compete at the highest level while also mentoring the next generation.

“Our focus is on improving together and looking out for one another. Sharing that growth and excitement with younger players has been incredibly rewarding. When my time is up, I’ll be the first fan cheering on this team.”

New Zealand’s Chance to Break Tradition

Historically, the Women’s Cricket World Cup has been dominated by Australia and England, with the two sides winning 11 of the 12 tournaments since 1973. New Zealand’s lone victory came back in 2000. However, the White Ferns’ recent success at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup has boosted their confidence heading into this 50-over tournament.

“Winning the T20 World Cup showed us what we are capable of,” Devine said. “But every tournament is a fresh start, and anything can happen here. As Kiwis, we like to fly under the radar, and that can work in our favor.”

Opening Clash: Australia

New Zealand kick off their campaign against arch-rivals Australia in a highly anticipated Day 2 match in Indore. The encounter promises fireworks as Devine leads a talented side that includes veterans Suzie Bates, Lea Tahuhu, and rising stars like Georgia Plimmer and Melie Kerr.

The squad combines experience with youthful energy, giving Devine the tools to attempt a fairytale finish to her illustrious ODI career.
