Mangaluru, Karnataka: Preparations are in full swing for the Chief Minister’s Mangalore India International Badminton Tournament 2025, scheduled to take place at the Urwa Indoor Stadium from October 27 to November 2. Dakshina Kannada district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao chaired a preliminary planning meeting on Monday to ensure smooth arrangements for the prestigious event, which is jointly organised by the Karnataka Badminton Association (KBA) and the Dakshina Kannada Badminton Association (DKBA). Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to inaugurate the tournament.
State Support and Funding
Minister Rao confirmed that the state government has sanctioned Rs 1 crore to support the tournament, marking a first-of-its-kind event in Karnataka. With over 450 national and international players expected to participate, the estimated cost for the event stands at Rs 2.8 crore. Organisers have been tasked with mobilising additional funds from private and public sector industries, banks, educational institutions, and CREDAI to cover the remaining requirements.
Infrastructure and City Readiness
Highlighting the importance of world-class infrastructure, Minister Rao urged the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to prioritise cleanliness, beautification, and repair of roads and footpaths around the stadium. All pending works at the Urwa Indoor Stadium, including gym facilities, are expected to be completed ahead of the event.
Deputy Commissioner Darshan H V directed the deployment of a health inspector to monitor hygiene, while the health department will station an ambulance and medical team at the venue throughout the tournament to ensure player and spectator safety.
Cultural Programmes and Promotional Activities
To elevate the tournament’s appeal, Minister Rao suggested that cultural programmes accompany the sporting event. A curtain-raiser function at a prominent location, such as one of Mangaluru’s beaches, could kick off the festivities, creating excitement among fans and tourists alike.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has approved the tournament as an International Challenge event, following recommendations from the Badminton Association of India and Karnataka Badminton Association. DKBA president Sathosh Kumar Shetty noted that the tournament will contribute to players’ global rankings, attracting competitive talent from across the world.
Association general secretary Supreeth Alva highlighted the broader vision: hosting such a high-profile event will position Mangaluru as a global sports and tourism hub, showcasing the city’s potential on the international stage.
